Lower Shannon and Mulcair Trout Fisheries – Permit Rules
Trout fishing is permitted in the part of the River Shannon from the downstream face of the bridge in O’Briensbridge to Thomond Bridge in Limerick City, and the Mulcair River.
1) Angling permitted during daylight hours only.
2) Angling shall be with single rod and line only.
3) Possession or use of a gaff is prohibited.
4) The use of electronic aids is prohibited.
5) Angling from boats is prohibited.
6) Use of live bait is prohibited.
7) Bag limit of 3 trout per day applies, it is prohibited to take any brown trout of less than 25cm in length.
8) The use of prawn/shrimp and flying C is prohibited while fishing for trout.
9) This Permit must be available at all times for inspection by ESB personnel or IFI officers. ESB reserve the right to refuse to furnish further annual, weekly or daily permits to any person found to be in breach of IFI or ESB angling regulation.
10) ESB or IFI Officers may withdraw this permit without notice upon breach of any of the conditions contained therein.
11) Possession of this permit does not confer the right on the holder of this permit to fish on ESB owned waters where the permit holder has had his permission to fish ESB owned waters revoked.
12) ESB maintain the right to refuse to sell an ESB angling permit to any angler who has previously had an ESB angling permit withdrawn by ESB or IFI Officers.
Location Based Rules
Lower Shannon
13) On the Lower Shannon fishing will be by single worn on max size 8 hook or by artificial fly max size 10 hook or small single or double barbless spinner max weight 6 grammes.
14) Angling is not permitted within 200 metres of Parteen Weir or any ESB dam.
15) Angling prohibited on the Headrace and Tailrace of Ardnacrusha Generating Station.
16) Angling from the bridge, or from within 10 metres upstream or downstream of the bridge, in O’Briensbridge is prohibited.
17) The end of the Tailrace for Ardnacrusha Generating Station is marked by 2 stakes – angling is prohibited upstream of this point and for a distance of 20 metres downstream of this point.
Mulcair
18) On the Mulcair worm fishing is prohibited. Fishing will be by artificial fly max size 10 hook or small single or double barbless spinner max weight 6 grammes.
19) Angling between Ballyclough Weir and Brownes Weir on the Mulcair is by Fly Only. The use of fixed spool reels, float or bubble floats is prohibited on this section of the fishery.
20) Angling prohibited between the Old Bridge and Annacotty Weir from June 1st.
